Cancer treatment is often complex, requiring long-term commitment to chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation. However, treatment adherence can be hindered by psychological factors, including anxiety, depression, and lack of social support (WHO, 2024). Psychosocial support, which includes counseling, peer support groups, and family engagement, is known to play a crucial role in improving treatment adherence and overall patient outcomes in cancer care (Adepoju et al., 2024).
In Zamfara State, cancer patients often face multiple barriers to treatment adherence, such as limited access to healthcare services, financial challenges, and lack of awareness (Muhammad et al., 2024). However, psychosocial factors such as emotional support and mental health care can mitigate these challenges and enhance patients' ability to follow through with their treatment regimens (Bello & Musa, 2024). This study will examine the impact of psychosocial support on cancer patients' treatment adherence in Zamfara State hospitals and explore how psychological and social factors influence patients' decision to continue or discontinue their treatment.
Despite the importance of psychosocial support in cancer care, many patients in Zamfara State do not receive adequate psychological or social support, potentially contributing to non-adherence to treatment (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2024). Psychosocial factors such as stress, fear of the disease, and lack of family support may lead to poor adherence to chemotherapy and other cancer treatments, which can worsen patient outcomes and decrease survival rates (Bello et al., 2024). The lack of structured psychosocial support programs in many hospitals further exacerbates these issues. This study aims to assess the role of psychosocial support in improving treatment adherence and explore the mechanisms by which emotional and social support influences patients’ treatment decisions.
This study will focus on cancer patients receiving care at hospitals in Zamfara State. Limitations may include the subjective nature of assessing psychosocial support and treatment adherence, as well as potential biases in self-reported data.
